Pissed Off Presbyterians

Kay Hagan, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator from North Carolina, is running a strong race against Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole. In fact, most polls show that Hagan is very likely to win, providing one of the turn-over seats in this year's senate. Because Dole, in spite of her money and Washington connections, has run out of ideas, she turned vicious. She's running an ad accusing Kay of being "godless." Kay happens to be an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and a Sunday School teacher. Kay's campaign ordered a "cease and desist" order which the Dole campaign (literally) laughed off. So now Kay is suing Dole for defamation of character. Her pastor and the Presbytery Executive have gone on the offensive for her. My mom, also a long-time Sunday School teacher and ordained Presbyterian elder, wrote Dole today saying "Shame on you!" Read more here ... if you aren't yet sick of nasty lies and character assassinations.

Well, don't you know mainline Protestants just go to church to be seen? They don't really believe!

Just kidding!

Unfortunately, lots of people think that. I recall in 2006 a Presbyterian candidate was attacked for not being a "real" Christian, whatever that meant. I thought there isn't supposed to be a religious test for public office...

I feel sad that Sen Dole decided to stoop to this level.

Hi Lauralew.
Yeah, I know the mainline arguments. My mom, who is really one of the most Christian people I know, used to get attacked by a group of fundies in the town where I grew up because she taught terrible books in her 7th grade language arts class. Godless stuff like Huck Finn.

But this ad implies not that Kay is the wrong kind of Christian, but that she's an atheist. Her years of service to the church are just out-right ignored.

I genuinely hope it doesn't take hold, but who knows what all these last minute attacks will mean? The stupid socialism label seems to have some sticking power on Obama all of a sudden.

Really, though, I do think this particular ad is just plain shameful. It is sad.

Blogger ate my comment, and it was such a succinct one, too. I shall try again:

Mainline, Fundie, Anabaptist, Cathar -- whatever. The Republicans have painted themselves into a corner with this shit, and now this shit is all they've got left.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of antisocial creeps.

First Democrat to hold that seat in 4 decades.

And we got our first female governor, also a Dem.
