Motor Oil and Vinegar

Just started reading Barbara Kingsolver's new book and I can't even get through the first chapter without wanting to share:

"A quick way to improve food-related fuel economy would be to buy a quart of motor oil and drink it. More palatable options are available. If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week. That's not gallons, but barrels. Small changes in buying habits can make big differences. Becoming a less energy-dependent nation may just need to start with a good breakfast."

Wow! That's easy. I keep meaning to head over to my local farmer's market. This will push me to do it.

We have a great farmers market... I haven't gone there as much as I should... but will now!

I've recently become aware of the phenomenon of diesel engine cars converted to run on used vegetable oil, to turn the whole thing around a little. The only complaint I've heard is that the cars smell a little bit like french fries :-)

Ed, those cars are all over my 'hood because we have a bio-diesel gas station here. Pretty cool and I don't really notice the smell.

And all, yeah I'm definitely spending more time at the local tail-gate market this year!

Read Hope's Edge by Anna Lappé and Frances Moore Lappé. Similar but in global perspective and zith great stories;including some from the U.S. Follow-up on Diet for a Small Planet of three decades ago by Lappé the mother.

Makes a great discussion starting for a book group or a formal class. Or just friends.
